Ideas to Help your Family
Celebrate Mother's Day

Mother’s Day does not have to be complicated to feel special. If you live in or near North Haven, there are plenty of simple ways to make the day memorable. Here are six family-friendly ideas within about a 10-mile radius of North Haven, plus a few stay-at-home craft options for families who want to celebrate without going far. Local spots below include Hamden, New Haven, and North Haven itself.

1. Enjoy a Mother’s Day brunch together

Treat mom to a relaxed family meal before the rest of the day begins. There are many local listing available, but check out Mother’s Day brunch at The Vue in Hamden and Mill Pond Gatherings in Northford for May 10, 2026. This is a great choice for families who want a simple “show up and enjoy” celebration. Reservations are a smart idea since holiday brunches fill quickly.

2. Take Mom on a flower-and-garden walk

If your family enjoys fresh air and beautiful scenery, plan a quiet walk through the Pardee Rose Garden in Hamden, located in East Rock Park. The garden is free, open daily during the season, and features dozens of rose varieties along with other blooms. It works especially well for families who want something peaceful, photo-friendly, and low-cost.

3. Pack a picnic for Edgerton Park

Edgerton Park, right on the Hamden–New Haven line, offers formal gardens, greenhouses, and picnic-friendly grounds. It is a beautiful option for families who want to slow down, bring lunch, and let the day feel unhurried. The park’s conservatory and greenhouse setting give the outing a little extra charm without requiring a long drive.

4. Visit Brooksvale Park for a farm-style family day

For families with kids, Brooksvale Park in Hamden is a fun Mother’s Day option. The park includes farm animals, gardens, open fields, and trails, making it easy to mix nature, play, and family time in one stop. This idea is especially good if Mom enjoys simple outdoor time more than formal plans.

5. Go for an easy family hike at Sleeping Giant

If your family likes being active, plan a Mother’s Day morning walk at Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden. The park map shows picnic areas and scenic views, so you can combine a gentle hike with time to sit, snack, and enjoy one another. For adventurous families, this can become a tradition instead of just a one-time outing.

6. Make Mother’s Day creative at home

If staying home feels more restful, turn the day into a family craft celebration. One local inspiration spot is Fun With Nature in North Haven, which offers art- and sensory-based family activities, including a splatter paint room. Even if you stay home, you can borrow that creative spirit and make the day personal.

Stay-at-home craft ideas for Mother’s Day.  Try one of these easy family projects:

  • Build a “Why We Love Mom” memory jar with handwritten notes from each family member.

  • Create pressed-flower bookmarks using flowers or greenery from the yard.

  • Paint flower pots and add herbs or spring flowers for Mom to keep.

  • Make a family handprint canvas with each person adding a message around it.

  • Host an at-home tea and craft hour with homemade cards, snacks, and music.

  • Create a photo scrapbook page from favorite family memories.

Make the day feel personal!

The best Mother’s Day celebrations are usually the ones that match Mom’s personality. Some moms would love brunch and flowers. Others would rather take a quiet walk, picnic in a park, or laugh with the family around the kitchen table making crafts. The goal is not to make the day expensive. It is to make it thoughtful.
