Who is Jesus?

What is Faith?  Who is Jesus?

Jesus was one of the most influential people in human history.   He is also one of the most controversial.  Was Jesus just a Jewish rebel standing up against Roman tyranny?  Was he a simple rabbi among many spiritual teachers in Jerusalem?  Was he God?  Was he a man?  Here is what philosopher C. S. Lewis said,

"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.  That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice."

Jesus is the foundation of our faith.  The Bible calls him the cornerstone of our faith.  Jesus is the solution for mans' sin.

The Problem of Sin

What is sin?  Simply put, sin is falling short of God's law.  We understand this because at times we have fallen short of our own expectations.  The difference is, God is Holy, he is righteous and his law is perfect.  This is what we see in scripture, and this is what we would expect from anyone who gives and upholds the law.

The result of our sin is a broken relationship with God.  We see this right from the beginning with the story of Adam and Eve.  Their sin caused them to be cast out of God's perfect Garden and they experienced separation from God.  The Prophet Isaiah says we are all like sheep who wander astray.  Even our own hearts cry out for something more...some deeper connection with something.  We try to fill that longing of our hearts in work, relationships, hobbies, special interests, drugs, alcohol, and other vices.  We were created with a desire to connect with God, and all other options will fall short of a renewed relationship with God.

God's Solution For Mankind

This separation caused by our sin was not what God intended!  He never wanted to have a broken relationship with mankind.  God's desire was to dwell with mankind so that he could love and provide for mankind as his children.  So God provides a way for man's sin to be forgiven and our relationship to be restored.

What was his plan?

His plan was to become a sacrifice for man's sin.  Jesus, became a man, lived among man and died on the cross for man's sin.  Jesus became the sacrifice for all man's sin.  Now we can be forgiven because of the sacrifice of Jesus.

Our Response

We must acknowledge our sin.

  •  We are all sinners by nature and by choice.  We don't always get it right.

  • We must acknowledge that our sin has driven a wedge between us and God.

  • We must acknowledge that we can not deal with our sin ourselves

We must believe in Jesus.

  • We must believe that Jesus is God in the flesh

  • We must believe that he died for our sin

  • We must believe that He will forgive us if we ask.

We must confess our sins to God.

  • We must confess our sinfulness to God and ask for forgiveness.

  • We must Repent and turn away from our sin and turn unto God.

  • We must ask God to show us how to live.

We must follow God with our life

  • As God shows us how to live we must choose to follow his instructions.

Here is a sample prayer of faith that you can pray right now if you are ready to believe.

"God, I realize today that I am a sinner.  I have blown it.

I have been living all for myself and that has created a barrier between me and you.

But I believe that you came to die for my sins and that you want to forgive me.

So I am asking you right now to forgive me.  I am sorry!

Help me to turn away from my sin and show me how to live."
